Quit Smoking in 2016

Make this the year you quit smoking

Make 2016 the year you quit smoking.

Make 2016 the year you finally quit smoking. SmokefreeVET is a free text messaging program to provide daily support, advice, and encouragement to you when you want to finally quit smoking.

You are most likely to be successful quitting when you take smoking cessation medication and receive counseling either in person or by calling a quitline. Using a text messaging program with counseling and medication can improve your chance of successfully quitting smoking.

Using a text messaging program with counseling and medication can improve your chance of successfully quitting smoking.

You can sign up for the program in English by texting the word VET to 47848 from your mobile phone or by visiting smokefree.gov/VET. For Spanish, text VETesp to 47848 or visit smokefree.gov/VETespanol. Messages are delivered directly to your cell phone by text message. The program begins up to two weeks before your quit date and continues for six weeks afterwards. You will receive 1-5 messages per day and can receive additional support by using one of SmokefreeVET's keywords.

Here are a few examples of the messages you will receive:

·         SmokefreeVET: Challenge yourself. Next time you have the urge to smoke, try to resist for 5 min. or skip the cig entirely. Think of it as practice for quit day.

·         SmokefreeVET: Tomorrow is quit day! Toss your pack in the trash & get plenty of sleep. For extra support, text these keywords at any time: Urge, Stress, or Smoked

·         SmokefreeVET: It's been 48 hours since you gave up cigarettes. We know it's been rough; are you staying away from smoking? Reply: YES or NO

There is no fee for using this service, but standard message and data rates do apply. Contact your cell phone carrier for more information.

SmokefreeVET is a collaboration between VA and the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
