We invite you to show your support for Connecticut veterans by joining us on Friday, Nov. 11 at our West Haven Campus for the Fourth Annual Veterans Day 5K Walk/Run for Fun.  Last year, approximately 350 people participated and we’re hoping to attract more runners and walkers this time around.

The race is a partnership between VA Connecticut, the Knights of Columbus, Hi-Tek Racing, Marty Schiavone and Start Line Race Services.

The event is organized by retired VA Connecticut social worker Donna Cramond.  An avid runner, Donna served on the hospital Wellness Committee and was constantly looking for ways to promote overall fitness and raise general awareness about the VA.   Struck by how few people were at the VA on Veterans Day and being a runner herself, Donna thought that a walk/run would address both areas in addition to supporting a good cause.  “Where’s a better place to be on Veterans Day than at a veterans hospital?” Donna says.

Proceeds from the race benefit two programs.   Half of the funds go to the Friends of Fisher House Connecticut project that is raising funds to build a Fisher House (Ronald McDonald House-equivalent) at the West Haven campus.  The other half will be allocated to the VA Connecticut Indigent Veteran Fund that provides health and comfort items to homeless patients.

The event will also recognize the veterans in attendance and present them with a small token of gratitude.

The Veterans Day 5K Walk/Run for Fun receives overwhelming support from the community.  Several volunteer organizations and veteran service groups have gotten involved to assist with the event and help raise money.  Local student groups (both high school and college) have sponsored collections that are donated to the hospital.  Businesses contribute items for door prizes including hotels that have generously donated free overnight stays.  This year, Start Line Race Services will donate timing services at the event.

Entry fee $20.  Race day registration opens at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 10 a.m.  T-shirts will be given to all who pre-registered and as available on race day.  Refreshments will be served to all participants in the courtyard after the race.

Register online at www.hitekracing.com/veteransday5k.  For more information, contact Donna Cramond at (203) 261-7963.
